Thomas Mackie Smith was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 27, 1809. His parents were Francis Gurney Smith and Eliza Mackie. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and earned the degrees of A.B. in 1828 and M.D. in 1831. He served as a resident physician in the Philadelphia Almshouse. A native of Virginia, Smith came to Perrysville, Vermillion County, Ind. in 1833. He ran a general store, quarry, and grist mill.
